Car2go in Madrid: first free-floating electric vehicle sharing in Spain
Madrid is the 4th city with a wholly electric car2go carsharing fleet, along with Stuttgart, Amsterdam and San Diego in California. The first free-floating carsharing service in Spain comprises 350 smart ‘fortwo’ electric drive vehicles. The operating home area includes 53 square kilometres.
Madrid has welcomed electric mobility and has implemented a law allowing all electric vehicles to park for free. This is one of the most expanded incentives that have been implemented in the European cities, according to Boundary conditions report, published in I-CVUE website.
Car2go decided to start with a completely new electric recharging infrastructure in Madrid, organized in centralized “hubs”. This unique pilot shows how the existing challenges of starting a service with a high amount of electric vehicles can be solved. Many cities do not have an existing public recharging infrastructure or allow only slow charging.
Although some of their cars have been vandalized in January, the deployment of EV sharing in Madrid is being successful.
